2011 North American International Auto Show

Boss: The next-gen Chrysler 300C was one of the stars in Detroit.

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS in DETROIT

EVEN WITH NEW-YEAR hangovers still persisting, the Americans fired on all cylinders with the 2011 Detroit show – the first in a number of years to have brought back some of the razzamatazz.

Key production-car showstoppers included the Chrysler 300C and its Dodge Magnum cousin, Honda Mk9 Civic, Hyundai Velostar, Toyota Prius V (a stretched seven-seater wagon version of the existing car), a Prius PHV plug-in hybrid, Buick Verano (a fancy Holden Cruze), Sonic (the MY12 Holden Barina), and an EV electric vehicle version of the new Ford Focus III.

Concept vehicles, too, had a big outing, led by Ford’s next-generation Escape/Kuga previewing Vertrek, the outlandish Mini Paceman three-door hatch/crossover SUV, a Toyota hybrid concept – the Prius C small car, the youth-baiting Hyundai Curb crossover, and a pointer to a future Kia Carnival replacement – the KV7.

Porsche also showed off a 918 Coupe hybrid supercar in track-ready RSR form.
