Hyundai's sixth-generation Elantra lobbed in Australia in early 2016 with an all-new look that followed the design of its larger Sonata and Tucson stablemates.

Just two specifications were offered initially – Active and Elite – with the promise of a spicy SR turbo variant to top the range later in 2016.

The new model underwent significant chassis testing in Australia to ensure it was better suited to local conditions and it had a positive impact on ride and handling characteristics of the Toyota Corolla and Mazda3 rival.

Power came from a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine matched with a six-speed manual (Active only) or a six-speed auto.

Boot space shrunk from 485 to 458 litres thanks to the new suspension set-up and fuel economy was not as good as the previous model thanks to the larger capacity engine, but it was still about average for the segment, consuming 7.2L/100km in auto guise.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto was offered as standard as was power windows, a 7.0-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, cruise control, a reversing camera and rear parking sensors among other features in Active guise.
