Future models - Hyundai - Ioniq 9Hyundai Ioniq 9 premieres in LAIoniq 9 large electric SUV likely to arrive in Australian Hyundai showrooms next year22 Nov 2024 HYUNDAI’S latest battery electric vehicle (BEV) to drop is the Ioniq 9 large SUV that made its world premiere at a function in Los Angeles last week where the South Korean auto-maker said the model “redefines EV mobility – big on space, bigger on innovation”.
Inspired by the Seven concept revealed in LA exactly three years prior, the Ioniq 9 is due to hit the domestic and US markets in the first half of next year with other areas after that, it is the range-topper of Hyundai’s fully electric Ioniq line-up and features “spacious” three-row seating for up to seven passengers and a “unique” design that is home to advanced BEV technology.
The premiere at architectural icon Goldstein House in LA revealed a vehicle with impressive interior space, a fully flat floor, so-called Relaxation Seats that also have a swivel function and a sliding “Universal Island 2.0” console – all designed to enhance the passenger experience.
Hyundai has coined a new word for the 9’s exterior styling – aerosthetic – with practical and futuristic design elements including a streamlined roof and flush surfaces to set it apart from other Ioniqs.
The big vehicle is built on Hyundai’s BEV-specific E-GMP architecture and has a 110.3kWh battery pack that delivers a WLTP-projected driving range of 620km and is said to be capable of a 10-80 per cent recharge in 24 minutes.
Its arrival following the Ioniq 5 and 6 is another step in Hyundai’s grand plan to deliver “leadership in electrification” through a full line-up of 23 BEV models by 2030.

“Based on Hyundai Motor Group’s acclaimed Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), Ioniq 9 offers outstanding interior space, providing customers with unique value while solidifying our leadership in the global EV market.”
On first impressions, the interior looks like a step up on existing Hyundai models, the brand describing it as offering a “serene, natural and spacious interior characterised by elliptical elements and calming tones to create a lounge-like atmosphere enhanced with natural light through a panoramic sunroof”.
Having a flat floor enables the Relaxation Seats in the first and second rows to fully recline and offer a leg rest for optimal comfort for up to four people – particularly handy to simultaneously recharge humans and vehicle.
Mindful passengers may be spending a lot of time in those Relaxation Seats as they feature the company’s first Dynamic Body Care system including a Dynamic Touch Massage function that gives a pressure and vibration sensation to stimulate blood flow and circulation said to reduce fatigue on long drives.
Keeping a focus on amenity, the 9 also introduces second-row swivelling seats that allow the second- and third-row occupants to face each other when the vehicle is stationary.
And the movable Universal Island 2.0 console provides storage options while at the same time allowing a walk-through front-row seating arrangement for convenience, facilitated by bidirectional armrests that can be opened from the front and rear allowing easy access to the console from the second row.
The console can be moved by up to 190mm so it can be accessed by second-row passengers, also providing 5.6 litres of storage in the upper tray, as well as 12.6 litres of storage in the lower sliding tray.
With the third-row folded flat there is 1323 litres of luggage space, reducing to 620 litres with all three rows erect.
A frunk adds to the storage capacity (88 litres for RWD models and 52 litres for AWD models).
Environmentally conscious material choices include eco process leather, recycled PET fabric, wool fabric, bio TPO/PU skin, bio PET/suede fabric, and bio paint. The 9 also uses paint made from recycled tyre waste.
Adding a futuristic air to the interior is the panoramic curved display, floating dashboard, slim air vents and ambient interior lighting.
Externally, the large vehicle is defined by a smooth, curved roofline, creating a streamlined aerodynamic profile and a low drag coefficient of 0.259Cd when fitted with digital side mirrors.
Airflow is smoothed by a 3D shaped underbody, active air flaps, hidden antennas and flush-fit wheels.
The model has the longest wheelbase of any Hyundai model, at 3130 mm, for gains to interior legroom, access and high-speed stability.
Its E-GMP architecture with “enhanced power electronics” system features an optimised gear ratio for hill climbing and the application of a two-stage inverter for improved efficiency.
The fully encapsulated PE system also helps reduce motor noise.
Other noise is quelled via improved acoustic laminated glass, triple sealing in all areas and the application of a reinforced plate in the A-pillar.
The platform runs a vehicle-to-load (V2L) convenience feature and 400V/800V multi-charging capability.
The Long-Range RWD model is powered by a 160kW rear motor, the Long-Range AWD alternative features an additional 70kW front motor, while the Performance AWD models rock 160kW motors at both the front and rear.
The Performance model can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, while the Long-Range AWD variant takes 6.7 seconds, and the Long-Range RWD takes 9.4 seconds.
