The current-generation car was launched here at the end of 2010, fitted with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic with paddle-shifters only. Traditionally, pocket rocket enthusiasts have favoured a manual ‘box instead, although Renault recently followed Volkswagen’s lead with its auto-only Clio RS. A six-speed manual option would not only enable the updated GTI to match the class-topping Ford Fiesta ST spec-for-spec, it would feasibly also enable VW to match its $25,990 (plus on-road costs) price. The DSG version kicks off at $27,990, but a manual would be expected to be between $2000 and $2500 cheaper. As reported this week (see story linked below), the upgraded Polo GTI will also get a power upgrade for its 1.4-litre engine, up from 132kW to 141kW. Adaptive dampers similar to those used in the bigger Golf GTI will also join the range. In line with the rest of the facelifted Polo range – due here in the second half of 2014 – the new GTI will get styling tweaks front and rear and a more Golf-like instrument fascia.
