TOYOTA Australia is continuing the drip-feed of information on its next-generation HiLux ahead of its October release, showing off an Australian-spec interior this week which carries more equipment and comfort features.

Despite the lift in specification for the 2015 model, no mention has been made of driver-assist technology along the lines of Ford’s forthcoming PX Series II Ranger, which will bring segment-first features such as active cruise control and lane-departure warning.

All new HiLux versions will benefit from a dash-mounted touchscreen measuring 6.1 inches in lower grades or 7.0 inches in the top-spec SR5 double-cab.

A variety of information and entertainment will be accessible via the monitor including the audio system which has up to six speakers, optional Toyota Link connected mobility and a reversing camera, which will be standard on all versions except cab-chassis.

Safety features are further improved with seven airbags, electronic stability control, ABS brakes, Isofix child-seat anchors and seatbelt reminders in all rows where fitted for each of the 31 variants of the new Thai-built one-tonner, which will again span single-cab, extra-cab and dual-cab body styles.

Drivers will be able to access various onboard systems such as Bluetooth-connected phones, navigation (where included) and entertainment with the touchscreen, steering wheel controls or a new voice-control system.

SR5 versions will be fitted with an additional 4.2-inch digital screen between the tachometer and speedometer for displaying vehicle information such as trip computer and fuel consumption.

The flagship HiLux will also gain keyless entry/start, chrome and silver highlights, a “premium” steering wheel (and matching gearknob) and self-levelling headlights.

Toyota says the new HiLux has more durable interiors for withstanding the day-to-day demands of families or the worksite, with “hard-wearing” fabric replacing the vinyl upholstery of the previous WorkMate variant. High-spec vehicle seats will be covered in part-leather trim.

For extra durability, WorkMate flooring will be easy-clean vinyl, while the rest of the range will have carpet coverings.

Interior space has increased for occupants and more front seat and steering column adjustment will allow occupants with “larger builds” to get comfortable. SR5 double cab customers will be able to option electric adjustment.

Other comfort-boosting kit will include room for two 600ml drink bottles with heating and cooling, USB and 12-volt power sockets, a large centre storage box and electric windows and mirrors.

Toyota Australia executive director of sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the next-generation HiLux will offer something for everyone regardless of their vehicle requirements.

“New HiLux is more unbreakable than ever with a stronger frame and body, new high-torque diesel engines, rugged yet advanced exteriors and spacious interiors that combine modern features with durable designs,” Mr Cramb said.

“Even workers in tough industries like mining, building and farming want the space, ergonomics, technology and ride comfort of the new HiLux interiors – and so do their families.” For the new generation, Toyota will offer an even greater combination of powertrains and transmissions with two petrol and two diesel engines in service, and the usual choice between 4x2 and 4x4 drivelines.

Every 4WD version will be equipped with an electronic transfer-case dial for shifting to low-range, while SR and SR5 have greater off-road ability thanks to a standard rear differential lock.

When it goes on sale later this year, the HiLux will be available in three different levels of specification from the base WorkMate, through SR to range-topping SR5.
