Toyota bZ4X updates announced

Bigger battery, more tech, faster acceleration for Toyota bZ4X; update due Q4 this year

12 Mar 2025

TOYOTA Australia has announced a range of “exciting and valuable” upgrades to its facelifted battery electric bZ4X SUV.

Due in Aussie showrooms in the final quarter of 2025, the updated bZ4X will feature battery and motor improvements, a bolstered driving range, faster acceleration, and design and equipment revisions aimed at improving value for Toyota customers.

“Launching our first battery-electric vehicle in 2024 was a historic moment for Toyota, and a very important step on our multi-pathway journey to decarbonisation,” said. Toyota Australia vice president of sales, marketing and franchise operations Sean Hanley.

“These upgrades to the bZ4X deliver valuable improvements for our customers, along with an increase in power which is sure to put a smile on the driver’s face.”

When it arrives Down Under, the updated bZ4X line-up will offer a larger 74.7kWh lithium-ion battery pack (up from 71.4kWh) , along with an increase in power starting with the two-wheel drive grade which increases (front) motor output from 150kW to 165kW.

Meanwhile, the all-wheel drive bZ4X will receive an impressive 92kW increase in system output, taking the tally to 252kW. The increase shaves a significant 1.8 seconds from the model’s 0-100km/h acceleration time, which drops to a nimble 5.1 seconds.

Toyota says that along with the changes to performance and acceleration, the improved thermal control and pre-conditioning systems now featured in the bZ4X will offer better charging performance in cold temperatures.

The Japanese importer had not, however, offered details of the model’s range increase, the bZ4X currently providing a driving range of 436km (WLTP) in two-wheel drive form and 411km (WLTP) in all-wheel drive guise.

Current versions of the bZ4X feature 400-volt electrical architecture aligned with Type 2 CCS charging to offer an approximate AC charge time of seven hours (based on 11kW input) or DC charge time of 30 minutes (based on 10-80 per cent top up at 150kW input).

Elsewhere, changes to the bZ4X include a “completely updated” cabin with a “more modern and premium design” and new 14.0-inch multimedia touchscreen.

Exterior styling changes include a newly revised frontal mask with evolved Hammerhead styling motif and gloss-black wheel arch trims on both model grades.

Currently priced from $66,000 to $74,900 plus on-road costs, the Toyota bZ4X competes within the SUV Medium over $60K segment where it rivals the likes of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (from $69,800 +ORC), Kia EV5 (from $56,770 +ORC), Skoda Enyaq (from $69,990 +ORC), related Subaru Solterra (from $69,990 +ORC), and Tesla Model Y (from $63,400 +ORC).

To the end of February, Toyota has sold 146 examples of the bZ4X locally, placing it behind the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (174 units), Kia EV5 (689), and Tesla Model Y (2331), but ahead of the Skoda Enyaq and Subaru Solterra, each with 24 unit sales.

Toyota Australia is expected to announce further specification, equipment, and pricing details of the 2026 Toyota bZ4X closer to the model’s arrival in Q4 of this year.
