Future models - Suzuki - FRONXSuzuki introduces Fronx coupe-SUVFronx coupe-SUV confirmed for Australia, Suzuki yet to confirm pricing and spec17 Jan 2023 By MATT BROGAN SUZUKI will soon add another SUV to its bustling line-up with the introduction of the coupe-style Fronx light SUV.
The Japanese importer describes the Fronx as a “new-genre SUV with a coupe style that’s strong and fluid” and that the compact model is “easy to drive”.
It features a bold and thick grille reminiscent of the Grand Vitara and offers “powerfulness” and “the strong presence of an SUV”, says Suzuki, adding that the sloping rear of the vehicle emphasises a “flowing and stretchy proportion”.
Like most Suzuki SUV models, the Fronx will offer a big-on-the-inside feel with what Suzuki says is a high-quality interior similar to that of the new S Cross, and “advanced equipment”, including 360-degree camera technology, head-up display, wireless device charging and rear seat air-conditioning outlets.
Unveiled in India as an indirect replacement for the aging Baleno small hatchback (in much the same way Hyundai’s Venue replaced the Accent), the Fronx is expected to arrive in local showrooms from 2024.
The Fronx measures 3995mm long, 1550mm high and 1765mm wide.
Power is supplied courtesy of a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, the same foundunder the bonnet of Baleno and Swift variants.
Outputs are listed at 74kW and 148Nm, which are channeled to the front wheels via the choice of a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
A 1.2-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder unit is also understood to be available, the Swift-sourced engine providing 66kW and 113Nm. The engine is paired with a five-speed manual as standard.
According to Suzuki Australia general manager of automobiles, Michael Pachota, the introduction of the Fronx will be another stepping stone for the brand locally and will solidify its presence in the light SUV segment.
“With the launch of the all-new Fronx, we’re combining unique sporty styling with SUV heritage to deliver an exciting new product to our line-up,” he said.
“Not only solidifying our presence in the light SUV segment, but this vehicle will also open doors to younger buyers looking to upgrade from a smaller hatchback to an SUV.”
The Suzuki Australia range currently comprises a slew of light and small segment hatch and SUV models, including the Baleno ($18,490 before on-road costs), Ignis (from $19,490 + ORC), Jimny (from $26,990 + ORC), S-Cross (from $40,990 + ORC), Swift (from $20,490 + ORC) and Vitara (from $26,490 + ORC).
Further bolstering the range will be the addition of a five-door Jimny four-wheel drive variant later this year.
Across 2022, Suzuki Australia achieved total sales of 21,578 units – a 23.5 per cent improvement over the year prior – giving it a two per cent share of the market overall.
The sales mix included 6124 Baleno variants (+57.2 per cent), 4405 examples of the Swift (+6.6 per cent), 1878 Ignis models (-5.1 per cent), 5697 Jimnys (+70.1 per cent), 360 S-Cross units (-19 per cent) and 3114 Vitaras (-16.8 per cent).
GoAuto understands that Suzuki is also expected to introduce its first all-electric model, the eVX, to Australia within the next 18-24 months, competing directly with the likes of the MG ZS EV.
