Future models - Skoda - EpiqElroq, Epiq BEVs on Skoda Australia wishlistSkoda Australia has high hopes of securing two smaller, more affordable electric SUVs2 Apr 2024 SKODA is set to Elroq and roll with an Epiq pair of compact battery electric SUV models expected to make their way to Australia in the next couple of years. The new Elroq medium SUV and the smaller, more budget-focused Epiq crossover are both in the crosshairs of the Czech brand’s Australian outpost, as well as an electric wagon and the production version of the Vision 7S large three-row SUV.
Skoda Australia managing director Michael Irmer confirmed the brand’s plans to offer the pair of more affordable battery electric vehicles (BEV) to cut through to a new BEV buyer demographic, having finally locked in launch timing for the Enyaq large SUV model line-up, now due in the last quarter of this year.
To date, Skoda has only shown a concept rendering of the Epiq compact SUV, set to be a cut-price BEV offering in Europe with a target price of €25,000 (AUD $41,450), while the Elroq has only been seen in clay or CGI form, but is expected to be fully revealed in the coming months.
Addressing Australian media recently, Mr Irmer was clearly excited about the potential for both models in Australia, in light of comments that the brand is refocusing on helping customers on stricter budgets still be able to buy a Skoda. “The Epiq is made to make e-mobility more accessible for the masses. For Europe, the car is contemplated to get a €25,000 starting price, but this is a lower specification than what we get," he said.
“But we have the advantage in Australia that, given the competitive forces, our price level for a similar spec is actually quite a bit lower than in Europe.
“We can’t wait for this car to come, it’s going to be awesome. At the moment we’re working in the business case phase to confirm any release date.”
Mr Irmer also confirmed that "we’ll get the Elroq as well”.
“It has not been shown in full … and the Elroq in size, will come as a medium, so between the Enyaq (large) and the Epiq (small),” Mr Irmer explained, before stating that the production Vision 7S – which debuted the brand’s new Modern Solid design language – will be the global flagship BEV.
“And last but not least, what Skoda stands for, what the brand is strong for, it’s wagons. There were times we were the biggest wagon seller in the marketplace. But Skoda is synonymous with wagons, so it’s fitting for us to bring an electric wagon as well,” he said.
Skoda’s first BEVs to be sold in Australia – the Enyaq and Enyaq RS crossover SUVs – will both come in coupe-style body forms with a more traditional wagon-style SUV a maybe to join at a later date.
It is still unclear what price we will see for the first ever Skoda BEVs, but the brand has made it clear that the strategy for its electric line-up will be a ‘top-down’ approach, meaning a budget starting price for the Enyaq models is unlikely.
The brand has confirmed that Australia will get an updated version of the Enyaq with a new powertrain, the entry-level rear-wheel drive version expected to have a 210kW motor and 85kWh battery pack good for more than 500km of driving range.
