New-look front end highlights Mitsubishi Triton facelift while MY19 update looms18 Sep 2018 MITSUBISHI has released a darkened teaser image to confirm that a facelifted Triton is on the way, while its Australian arm appears to be preparing a separate, imminent model-year update for the ute that will increase prices by up to $1000, among other expected changes.
The single shot offers a glimpse of the Triton’s new-look front end, which uses the Dynamic Shield design language seen on the mechanically related Pajero Sport large SUV and Eclipse Cross small SUV.
As such, the front lighting arrangement is split, with the top sections featuring the low- and high-beam headlights alongside daytime running lights, while the lower clusters incorporate indicators and foglights.
The aggressive redesign is capped off by a prominent black grille with large silver trim, swollen wheelarches, a tweaked bonnet and fresh alloy wheels. Minor adjustments are likely for the rear end.
The Japanese could also take the opportunity to swap the Triton’s five-speed torque-convertor automatic transmission for the eight-speed unit found in the Pajero Sport.
Aside from a single petrol variant, all Tritons are motivated by a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 133kW of power at 3500rpm and 430Nm of torque at 2500rpm.
Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) is tight-lipped about its plans for the facelifted Triton, but it is expected to be introduced into its line-up next year as an MY20 model.
Meanwhile, the pre-facelift Triton is already in run-out, suggesting an MY19 upgrade is coming for the current model, but MMAL declined to comment on what changes are in store when contacted by GoAuto.
While an increase in specification is likely, pricing is already available for the 20-variant MY19 Triton line-up, with 4x2 variants $190 dearer, while 4x4 GLX variants jump by $490.
The GLX+ 4x4 club-cab pick-up diesel is also up $490, but its dual-cab siblings are instead $990 more expensive than before.
Similarly, the GLS and Exceed grades are $990 costlier, while the special-edition Blackline grade continues for MY19 but is priced $1000 higher.
As such, pricing now ranges from $22,490 before on-road costs for the manual GLX 4x2 single-cab chassis petrol to $48,990 for the automatic Exceed 4x4 dual-cab pick-up diesel.
An announcement confirming the Triton’s revised pricing, as well as its MY19 specification, is expected to be made by MMAL soon, while the facelifted model could break cover at the Paris motor show next month.
Sales of the Triton have improved this year, with 16,985 examples sold to the end of August – an 8.7 per cent increase over the 15,619 deliveries made during the same period in 2017.
As a result, the Triton is currently placed third in the ute segment, trailing the Toyota HiLux (34,424 units) and Ford Ranger (28,571) but ahead of the Holden Colorado (12,504), Isuzu D-Max (11,900) and Nissan Navara (10,607), among others.
