Future models - Mitsubishi - TritonMitsubishi shows Triton Snow Shredder in TokyoOff-road ready Triton Snow Shredder one of several concepts at Mitsubishi’s Tokyo stand16 Jan 2024 By MATT BROGAN MITSIBISHI has shown no fewer than seven concept models at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon, headlined by a substantially beefed-up Triton it calls the Snow Shredder.
The wintry warrior features no more power or torque than the original model – rated at 150kW and 470Nm – but is decked out with a bevy of off-road features, said to make it easier for adventuring in the snow.
Based on a Triton GSR, the Snow Shredder is equipped with a snorkel, auxiliary LED lighting, steel bumpers, rock sliders, bead-locked wheels, over-fender cladding, and underbody bash plates among its many upgrades.
It also scores additional external storage compartments for slushy snow gear, including a handy roof-top locker.
Mitsubishi has not yet revealed whether it will offer the accessories shown on a future production model, as dealer-fit options or stick with the extensive range of TJM-sourced parts shown at the model’s Bangkok debut.
According to Mitsubishi, the Snow Shredder draws its name from a “snowboarder who cuts steep snow surfaces and ice slopes with aggressive turns”.
The model may yet preview a Mitsubishi Triton rival to the Ford Ranger Raptor, possibly wearing the famed Ralliart moniker.
Mitsubishi is yet to reveal any details.
Elsewhere on the Mitsubishi stage at Tokyo Auto Salon are the Outlander PHEV Active Field concept, the mild-mannered medium SUV made over with a host of off-roading modifications, including larger Rays Daytona M9+ alloy wheels and Yokohama Geolandar A/T tyres, a spare wheel carrier, roof rack, tow bar, side steps, bonnet, and two-tone colour scheme.
Mitsubishi also took the opportunity to showcase a range of domestic market models, including the Delica D:5 and Delica Mini Chamonix Show Gear concepts that reflect the theme of the Triton Snow Shredder, but in a more condensed package.
Both concepts score a lift kit (+40mm), accessory alloy wheels, a front bash bar, auxiliary LED lighting, rear ladder, and a roof rack with lockable storage pod.
Mitsubishi will launch its new-generation Triton in Australia next month. As reported by GoAuto previously, the light commercial utility range will begin from $43,690 plus on-road costs, with lower-spec models to follow in due course.
The updated twin-turbo Triton engine now develops 150kW at 3500rpm and 470Nm from 1500-2750rpm, an increase of 17kW/40Nm over the single-turbo predecessor.
From launch, a six-speed automatic transmission is the only unit available, however GoAuto understands a six-speed manual will also be offered across selected grades in due course.
Braked towing capacity steps up by 400kg to match the majority of segment rivals at 3500kg.
Standard idle-stop technology helps improve fuel consumption and emissions, the range now sipping as little as 7.5 litres per 100km (199g/km) in 4x2 format and 7.7 litres per 100km (200g/km) in 4x4 guise.
Equipment highlights for the Triton GLX include 17-inch steel wheels, a black grille, cloth upholstery, vinyl flooring, climate control, a 7.0-inch digital instrument panel, native sat-nav, USB-A and USB-C charging ports front and rear, a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment array, wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto connectivity, four-speaker sound and Bluetooth connectivity.
The GLX+ grade adds 17-inch alloys, rear differential lock, front fog lights, a high-mounted LED brake light, rear window privacy glass, rear auto emergency braking (AEB), 360-degree cameras and DAB+ digital radio reception.
The penultimate GLS grade adopts 18-inch alloys, Super Select II four-wheel drive system with locking centre differential, heavy-duty rear suspension, a tray bed liner, heated wing mirrors, LED exterior lighting, a gloss black grille, dual-zone climate control, terrain- and hill descent control, keyless entry and ignition, an electrochromatic rear-view mirror, and a wireless device charger.
Optionally, the GLS is further offered with leather upholstery, heated front seats and power driver’s seat adjustment for an extra $1500.
The flagship GSR variant adds 18-inch alloys in black, a body-coloured grille, wheel arch mouldings, styling bar, roof rails, leather upholstery with orange stitching, GSR-branded floor mats and power driver’s seat adjustment.
A broadened safety suite now includes front cross-traffic alert and a driver monitoring system in addition to forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, and junction assist, rear AEB, and a centre airbag.
Paint colours extend to eight with red and white the only solid options. Metallic, mica and prestige hues include White Diamond, Black Mica, Blade Silver, Graphite Grey, Impulse Blue, and Yamabuki Orange.
