Future models - Mitsubishi - OutlanderMitsu unveils next Outlander - with V6 power!Mitsu heralds V6 power and a front-wheel drive version of its all-new Outlander SUV6 Apr 2006 MITSUBISHI’S new Outlander compact off-roader has broken cover in two- and four-wheel drive configuration – and with a V6 engine – ahead of its introduction at the New York International Motor Show next week. However, Mitsubishi Australia has been quick to rule out a front-wheel drive version in this market, with a spokesman insisting that a two-pronged strategy like the one Hyundai is employing with its Tucson would not be used here. "It will be four-wheel drive only," he said. Due on sale in Australia around October, the all-new Outlander will be built off a newly designed "high rigidity" platform and will employ an aluminium roof panel claimed to lower the centre of gravity and reduce roll inertia. It will also feature steering wheel gearshift paddles, a split tailgate and a seven-seat option that comprises an "occasional use" third row stored flat under the floor. Significantly, it will also be available with a choice of four-cylinder or six-cylinder power. The entry-level model available at launch will be powered by a 127kW/230Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine and offered with a new six-speed continuously variable transmission. A model variant with a new 150kW/352Nm 3.0-litre MIVEC V6 engine will follow early next year. Both models will use a part-time 4WD system, similar to the Pajero, that allows switching "on the fly" from 2WD to 4WD. Prices are expected to start around $32,000 for the 2.4-litre model, rising to $42,000 for the V6.
