Heritage inspired Mini celebrates 1965 rally

Mini’s 1965 Victory Edition JCW channels historic Monte Carlo rally win

27 Feb 2026

MINI’s giant-killing win in the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally – 60-plus years ago – is being celebrated by the BMW-owned brand with an as yet unpriced 1965 Victory Edition Mini due in Q2 this year.

Only 30 examples of the heritage-inspired John Cooper Works (JCW) based Victory Edition will be imported Down Under making ownership somewhat exclusive.

Mini Australia says the special edition will be offered in both petrol and all-electric variants, comprising 20 Mini John Cooper Works (ICE) and 10 Mini John Cooper Works Electric models for the local market.

The model pays tribute to the Mini Cooper S that claimed victory at the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally, driven by Fin Timo Mäkinen and co-driver Paul Easter, eclipsing many more powerful models and cementing the brand’s reputation for agility and performance in demanding conditions.

Looking at the rally winning Mini Cooper S’s specs it becomes obvious just how momentous the achievement was.

The works racer ran a twin carburettor 1275cc A-series four-cylinder petrol engine producing roughly 70kW (best case scenario) fed from twin 25-litre fuel tanks driving the front wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with straight cut gears rolling on specialised Dunlop rally tyres, the body/chassis with reinforced (gusseted) sub-frames.

The red/white rally car weighed about 650kg giving it at a big advantage in the tight Monte Carlo driving conditions with many competitor cars tipping the scale at nearly twice that.

Tiny 7.5-inch front discs and small rear drums performed braking duties the model running on 10-inch Mini-lite wheels with Dunlop Rally S44 tires.

It was equipped with a roof rack for the spare wheel, Lucas fog/driving lights, rally timers, and a skid plate for underbody protection.

Safety kit included a roll cage, fire suppression system, and racing bucket seats.

Moving to the incoming 1965 Victory Edition we find it blends heritage-inspired design cues with contemporary performance and technology, reinforcing the motorsport DNA that continues to underpin the John Cooper Works line-up.

Powertrain choices are a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 170kW and 380Nm, enabling a 0-100km/h sprint in 6.1 seconds in the petrol-powered JCW variant with the JCW electric variant good for up to 190kW, with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.9 seconds.

Externally, the 1965 Victory Edition adopts a distinctive visual identity inspired by Mini’s motorsport heritage, finished in Chili Red with a contrasting white bonnet stripe extending over the roof and rear.

A white ‘52’ race number graphic on the flanks references the winning Monte Carlo car, while ‘1965’ badging on the C-pillar highlights the significance of the anniversary.

Additional exterior features include a choice of panoramic glass roof and model-specific 18-inch alloy wheels, with petrol variants receiving JCW Lap Spoke two-tone designs and electric models fitted with JCW Mastery Spoke black wheels.

Inside, the edition gains a range of bespoke details, including illuminated door sills featuring ‘1965’ lettering, a commemorative plaque referencing the Monte Carlo victory and heritage-themed design elements throughout the cabin.

The John Cooper Works interior combines anthracite and red finishes, with further ‘1965’ detailing applied to the steering wheel, centre console, and key cap.

Mini Australia says the Victory Edition arrives amid strong demand for its performance and electrified models in Australia, with the JJCW range accounting for 21 per cent of total Mini sales in 2025, while electrified vehicles represented 31 per cent of overall volume.
