First Mercedes-Benz production EV teased ahead of Stockholm debut

28 Aug 2018

MERCEDES-BENZ has released a short teaser video of its first all-electric production vehicle, the EQC SUV, ahead of a public debut in Sweden on September 4.

The EQC will be revealed at the 2018 Mercedes me Convention in Stockholm, an event dedicated to the future direction of technology, design and art.

A short teaser video has been released via Daimler’s Twitter feed that shows a close-up shot of the EQC’s headlight and grille followed by the date of the vehicle’s reveal.

The video shows an LED daytime running light signature stretching across the top of the car’s grille, which wraps around the outer edge of the headlight cluster.

Few other details can be ascertained from the video, other than the EQC will sport a traditional-looking horizontal chrome grille, a curious detail given it will not require such a feature given its all-electric drivetrain.

Headlight styling looks to represent a mix of the current GLC medium SUV and the Generation EQ concept, the first all-electric concept released under the EQ brand at the 2016 Paris motor show.

However, in a tweet Mercedes said that “it’s not just a rehash of the concept vehicle”, suggesting that some more comprehensive design changes are likely.

The EQC is expected to have roughly the same exterior dimensions as the GLC, however its interior layout is unknown.

No official powertrain details have yet been revealed, however the Generation EQ concept featured a scalable battery capable of outputting up to 300kW, while rumours suggest the EQC will come with a 70kWh battery pack that can produce up to 500km of driving range.

The EQC is expected to go on sale globally in 2019, and will be followed by the EQA, based on the A-Class hatch and revealed in concept form at last year’s Frankfurt motor show.

Using a 60kWh battery pack, the EQA Concept was capable of a roughly 200kW/500Nm output, zero to 100km/h sprint time in around 5.0 seconds, and an approximate driving range of 400km.

Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche said that the brand hoped to expand its EQ portfolio of electric vehicles to 10 models by 2022.

The decision to reveal the EQC on September 4 is conveniently a fortnight ahead of Audi, which plans to unveil its e-tron all-electric SUV on September 13.
