Future models - Mercedes-AMG - GT - R RoadsterGeneva show: Mercedes-AMG GT R goes toplessHi-po Merceredes-AMG GT R Roadster revealed at Geneva, Australian launch unlikely5 Mar 2019 MERCEDES-AMG has revealed its GT R Roadster at the Geneva motor show – bringing drop-top thrills to its high-performance sportscar range topper.
Currently, the GT R Coupe is on sale from $348,711 plus on-road costs, however Mercedes-Benz media relations and product communications manager Ryan Lewis said that the brand is unlikely to import the convertible body style.
“At this stage there are no plans to bring the GT R Roadster,” he said.
“We are focused on GT R Coupe and will continue to offer the GT and GT C Roadster variants in Australia.”
The Roadster is almost identical to the Coupe, except for the folding fabric roof made from lightweight materials including magnesium, steel and aluminium.
To compensate for the loss of roof rigidity, Mercedes engineers have employed an array of underbody stiffening, adding 80 kilograms to the total weight compared to the Coupe.
14 exterior finishes will be available in European markets, including a matte grey scheme that is exclusive to GT R variants.
Just 750 units will be produced, carrying over the Coupe’s mechanical components including the 430kW/700Nm 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8.
That translates to a drag strip sprint from zero to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds – the same figure achieved by the tin-top.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and a launch control mapping is equipped for those looking to take off in a hurry.
The Roadster also carries over yellow brake callipers, rear-wheel steering, active aero, a rear wing, nappa leather upholstery and a 12.3-inch digital cluster.
Other performance parts include AMG coilovers with adaptive dampers, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, active steering, compound brakes measuring 390mm (front) and 360mm (rear), and an active limited-slip differential.
Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific moved 172 GT units in 2018 for a 15.4 per cent rise.
