"We have to go through a testing process and if that goes well there’s a very good chance we could introduce a diesel towards the end of next year," Mazda Australia managing director Doug Dickson told GoAuto last week. "We need to test it and then look at the business case from the pricing andprofitability point of view." The new common-rail 2.0-litre engine produces 105kW at 3500rpm and 360Nm at 2000rpm with a targeted combined fuel consumption of 6.0L/100km when mated toa six-speed manual gearbox. It also has a particulate filter and meets Euro IV emission standards. "To me, it looks as though diesel is a premium product – it’s being offered bypremium brands at premium prices," Mr Dickson said. "The technology is very avant-garde, cutting edge. Performance and delivery is right up there. Just speculating, I think we’ll look at doing a more upmarket version."
