Geely reveals high-end Galaxy electrified line-up

GEELY has shown its high-end electrified product series at an event in Hangzhou this week, the Galaxy range of models to introduce not only some of the most exciting styling yet seen from the Chinese manufacturer, but also a multitude of new electrified technologies, including the Aegis battery safety system.

Showing its Galaxy L7 long-range plug-in hybrid SUV and concept Galaxy Light four-door coupe, Geely also revealed its next-generation NordThor Hybrid 8848 powertrain and Galaxy N-OS vehicle operation system which utilises the latest Snapdragon 8155 processor.

Geely says the technologically advanced Galaxy range will offer buyers “a best-in-class experience”, and that its efficient long-range plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles will ride on a dedicated electrified vehicle architecture dubbed E-CMA which will aid in forming a new, futuristic design language for the forthcoming range.

As many as seven new Geely Galaxy models are expected within the next two years. Of the seven vehicles, four will be long-range hybrid electric – including the L7 SUV and L6 sedan which begin deliveries in Q3 of this year – and three all-electric, with the Galaxy E8 slated for delivery in Q4 of 2023.

Geely says the Galaxy series of vehicles will be the first to utilise its Aegis battery safety system which is said to offer the strongest impact protection yet offered from a battery pack “during crash situations”.

Further, the battery pack is coupled with the brand’s Wise Star Cloud Connected Computing System (WSCCCS) to “accurately predict and pre-empt thermal runaways and other situations”, while also extending battery life by a claimed 20 per cent.

On the hybrid side of the range, and thanks to its newly introduced NordThor 8848 hybrid driveline, Geely says it has achieved a thermal efficiency figure of 44.26 per cent and a reduction in fuel consumption of 15 per cent courtesy of a new predictive energy management system.

Paired with a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT), the NordThor hybrid powertrain can accelerate the Galaxy L7 SUV from standstill to 100km/h in 7.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 200km/h.

Geely says the model can achieve real-world fuel consumption figures of 5.2 litres per 100km, giving the Galaxy L7 SUV a theoretical range of 1370km.

The firm said it will reveal pure battery electric range “in due course”.

In time, all Galaxy models will have access Geely’s own 72-satellite network to provide what the car-maker says is access to centimetre accurate, high-precision maps to “assist in intelligent driving functionality”.

It says the network – which will also assist the brand in brining autonomous driving capabilities to its vehicles – will be fully operational by 2025, providing “full global coverage” for Galaxy models.
