Ford announces Mustang Mach-E for Australia

RESERVATIONS will soon open for the Ford Mustang Mach-E Down Under, with Ford Australia this week confirming the model is headed to these shores, three years after its production debut in the United States.

Produced in both Mexico and China, the Mustang Mach-E will be offered locally in three trim grades, including the flagship GT which packs a 358kW/860Nm all-wheel drive punch. It will become the fastest car Ford will sell locally.

The Blue Oval brand says the Mustang Mach-E will be its first all-electric passenger car for the Aussie market, but that it plans to bring at least five electrified models here by the end of 2024.

It says the Mustang Mach-E has been designed to “live up to its Mustang heritage, with cutting edge technology to give drivers a new, exhilarating experience behind the wheel”.

Locally, the Mustang Mach-E will be offered in Select, Premium and GT grades. A pair of battery options is available, with Select variants featuring a 71kWh battery and Premium and GT grades a larger capacity 91kWh offering.

The Select grade is powered by a single electric motor which delivers 198kW and 430Nm to the rear wheels, and a potential range of up to 470km pending final homologation. The Premium trim grade brings 216kW of power and 430Nm of torque from its single motor, the variant offering the furthest driving distance of “close to 600km”.

For the flagship Mach-E GT, with its 358kW/860Nm dual motor output, a driving range of 490km is possible – alongside a 0-100km/h dash of 3.7 seconds.

Further bolstering the GT’s performance credentials is MagneRide adaptive suspension and performance brakes, and a special Untame Plus drive mode for closed course driving only.

The performance mode is said to “maximise fun and consistent lap times on short courses” by “proactively cooling the battery and moderating output”. It also relaxes input from the stability and traction control systems, adapts the AWD strategy, and recalibrates brake and throttle mapping.

While Ford has yet to confirm pricing or final specification for the Mustang Mach-E range, it says the five-seat model will arrive as standard with a 15.5-inch infotainment screen with SYNC4 operating technology, a 10.2-inch instrumentation cluster, wireless mobile phone charging pad, and a 10-speaker B&O premium sound system.

All Australian-delivered Mach-E varaints will be fitted as standard with a panoramic sunroof.

Reservations will open for the Mustang Mach-E soon.
