BMW unveils special X2 M Mesh Edition

BMW has unveiled a special-edition version of its X2 dubbed the M Mesh Edition, however performance fans need not get their hopes up – the new contender is not BMW’s first full M X2, but rather a special edition with a series of visual and spec upgrades.

Due to touch down in local showrooms in the first quarter of next year, the X2 M Mesh Edition is immediately identifiable from the outside by its new decals on the bonnet, front and rear doors and front bumper sides, finished in orange to provide a stark contrast with the exclusive Brooklyn Grey metallic or Sapphire Black metallic paint hue.

The M Mesh Edition is also available in Alpine White, Phytonic Blue metallic or Sunset Orange, in which case the decals are finished black.

Decal colours will also match the 20-inch M aerodynamic alloy wheels.

If you ask BMW, the biggest visual change to the exterior has been the fitment of the BMW M mesh kidney grille finished in high-gloss black, while the bumper trim inserts and cladding on the side skirts, doors and wheelarch trim are finished in Frozen Black-Brown metallic.

BMW Individual’s high-gloss Shadow Line exterior package is offered on the X2 M Mesh Edition, which includes high-gloss black window surrounds, exterior mirror surrounds, mirror base, mirror triangle, B-pillar trim and C-pillar surround trim.

Offered on an X2 for the first time, Shadow Line also includes black chrome finish for the kidney grille surround, BMW badge bezel on the tailgate and dual-exit exhaust pipes.

Inside, a two-tone interior theme dominates with the standard M seats upholstered in Mocha Dakota leather and Anthracite-coloured Alcantara, offset by orange contrast stitching which is also found on the instrument panel and centre console.

Sporty kit such as M stainless steel pedals, M leather steering wheel and key fob with M identifier are all standard, as are floor mats with orange stitching and entry sills with ‘Edition’ lettering.

Engine-wise, the M Mesh Edition is based on the s201 grade, which employs a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine producing 141kW/280Nm, driving the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The second-most powerful X2 engine behind the M35i, the M Mesh Edition is able to reach 100km/h from standstill in 7.7 seconds.

Other standard equipment carried over from the donor vehicle includes a 10.25-inch infotainment display with real-time traffic information and Apple CarPlay compatibility, head-up display, BMW ConnectedDrive services and LED headlights.

Exact Australian pricing and specification will be revealed closer to the M Mesh Edition’s launch next year – for reference, the X2 sDrive 20i asks $56,900 plus on-road costs.

To the end of August, BMW has sold 441 examples of the X2, marking a steep 57.8 per cent decline over the 1045 it managed to the same point last year.
