Super TestCar reviews - Volvo - XC70 - SE 5-dr wagonVolvo modelsPlan Views1 Aug 2001 By BRUCE NEWTON THE Cross Country takes the front-wheel drive platform of the V70 2.4T and converts it to all-wheel drive via a viscous coupling. In dry conditions, the balance of drive front to rear is 95/5 per cent, although the bias can change to 50/50 if front-wheel slip is detected. Power is provided by Volvo's inline five-cylinder 2.4 low-pressure turbo engine mounted transversely and delivering power via a five-speed manual or five-speed adaptive semi-automatic "Geartronic" gearbox. Why five cylinders when four or six are the norm? Packaging is a big part of the issue here.
