TOYOTA has been selling Taragos to Australians since 1983, and for many people, the always-stylish people mover has transcended its role as mere transportation, becoming a symbol of freedom or adventure, in much the same way as 'Kombi' did a generation earlier. Now there is a new model, one that subtly addresses the wrongs of the previous model, to put the eight-seater Toyota back in the forefront of its segment. In $51,990 GLX guise, the latest Tarago is a very good thing.

Family Tree: TaragoAFTER the breathtaking design and development expense of the egg-shaped, mid-engined Tarago of the 1990s, Toyota played it safe by basing the 2000 third-generation edition on the front-wheel drive Camry family sedan. The result was a far simpler, and also much more accessible, eight-seater people mover, complete with two side-sliding doors and a wonderfully spacious interior. The Camry also provided its powerplant - a 115kW/221Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox. Today's Tarago may be virtually brand new, but it is a subtle refinement of the previous model.
