The box is electronically controlled and has four speeds. The manual box has an upgraded clutch able to handle the extra torque of the turbo-diesel. To qualify as a proper off-roader, the Prado gets a dual-range transmission with a transfer case operated by a lever on the transmission tunnel. For smoother operation, Toyota changed the weight of the transfer case dynamic damper by 900 grams. Full-time four-wheel drive is via a centre differential that can be locked for serious off-road work. This operates automatically when the system is operating in low range. The traction control system is standard on Grande.
