RENAULT has tackled the previous Laguna’s weaknesses head-on with the third-generation model launched in Australia during the middle of 2008, with a particular emphasis on tackling reliability, durability, quality and interior presentation. And, indeed, the latest model is a quantum leap forward for the series in these respects, while providing a fresh look and an industry-leading turbo-diesel engine application. However, in top-line Privilege dCi edition, the X91 Laguna suffers from unexpected shortcomings, undermining what could have been the most improved car of the last 12 months.

Renault X74 Laguna dCi hatchback Series II
Released: November 2006
Ended: May 2008
Family Tree: LagunaAfter almost a year of being discontinued, the second-generation, X74 Laguna returned minus the petrol-powered 2.0 and 3.0-litre V6 engines and wagon model, for a facelifted 102kW/320Nm 2.2-litre four-cylinder dCi turbo-diesel model driving the front wheels through a five-speed automatic gearbox. This single-model entry was designed to keep the nameplate present in the prestige segment until the next-gen X91 Laguna arrived in the middle of 2008. Comfortable, sprightly and very well equipped the Renault may have been, but a lack of promotional budget meant that this underrated model remained invisible to consumers.
