PEUGEOT is attempting to lure compact SUV customers with its 308 Touring which mixes French flair, SUV practicality and good fuel economy. The new model, which replaces the 307 Touring, comes at a $2600 premium over the hatch, but is far more practical. An optional third row of seats means the 308 Touring can carry seven people. Five of those can be folded or removed to turn the small French wagon into a comfortable cargo van. Fuel economy as low as 5.3 is available when using the 1.6-litre diesel manual model and there are two petrol engines and a 2.0-litre diesel available. Pricing starts off at $30,590 and runs through to $38,390. Surprisingly, electronic stability control is not standard on the base cars but a panoramic glass sunroof is.

307 Touring 5-dr wagon
Released: October 2003
Ended: August 2008
Family Tree: 308THE Peugeot 307 Touring (or SW for station wagon) was unveiled as a barely-disguised concept at the Frankfurt motor show in 2001 and was launched locally in October 2003. Joining a growing market segment of small cars to offer seven seats such as Holden’s European-built Zafira, the 307 Touring (with a 100mm-longer wheelbase) offered clever interior packaging and seating flexibility without the sheer bulkiness and fuel appetite of a full-size SUV.
Power came courtesy of either an eight-valve 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 66kW and 205Nm (matched exclusively to a five-speed manual transmission) or a 16-valve 2.0-litre DOHC petrol unit offering 100kW and 190Nm, with either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual. May 2005 saw a welcome revision with new-generation turbo-diesel technology in the form of two new Euro 4 emissions-compliant HDi engines. The 1.6- and 2.0-litre engines (the latter exclusive to the Touring) were cleaner and offered more power and torque for healthy gains in performance and fuel economy over the engines they replaced. In October 2005, the 307 range was revised with new interior and exterior styling (including Peugeot’s signature gaping bumper-level air intake), more standard equipment and the availability of two automatic turbo-diesel models.
