GOOD looks can only get you so far (apparently), and so it has been with the latest Rio – arguably the most improved car released in 2011. One of our biggest issues with the spunky newcomer has been the huge price increases, particularly on the impressive 1.6-litre direct-injection GDI engined SLi hatch. But as most people will plonk for the base S 1.4-litre hatch over the lifecycle of this model, here’s our rather different take on the entry level Kia.

Family Tree: RioJOINING the JB Rio range almost two years after the 1.6-litre model hit the market, the 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine versions produced 70kW of power and 125Nm of torque and drove the front wheels via a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox. Initially reserved for the base Rios, this unit eventually replaced the 1.6 engine in the revised (and rationalised) Rio facelift range in late 2009. Sturdy, spacious and with five-door practicality, the JB really only had a low price and long warranty on its side. Few lamented its passing for the reborn Rio in September 2011.
