Road TestCar reviews - Jeep - Commander - 5.7 V8 5-dr wagonJeep modelsOverviewJeep's first seven-seat SUV is great value but the Hemi V8's thirst matches its urge16 Feb 2007 By CHRIS HARRIS STAND well back. That angular, chrome-dentured beast looming on the horizon is about to dominate your world like few other motor vehicles short of a B-double Kenworth. But hang on. Actually it’s not as big as it seems, is it? Nowhere near, in fact. Jeep’s new Commander may seem to have borrowed some of its presentation from the Hummer but, even though it also happens to be Jeep’s first seven-seater, it’s not really that massive after all. Way smaller than an Audi Q7, or a Toyota LandCruiser. This is a fact explained by it being based largely on the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which it matches not only in wheelbase, but also overall length. Interestingly, the Commander is priced only $1000 above the Grand Cherokee, which seems extremely good value for money considering the extra things (seats) it has to offer. But, if you’re thinking of opting for the 5.7-litre Hemi version, beware the fuel consumption.
