Super TestCar reviews - Honda - CRX - 2-dr targa coupeHonda modelsUsed Rivals18 Jun 2003 MAZDA MX-5 2D CONVERTIBLE (1989-2001) A MODERN classic. Born in the USA, the Lotus-like MX5 was designed as a pure sports car - often described as the "Elan from Japan". It has mainly Mazda 323 components but with rear-wheel drive to please the purists. The 1.8-litre engine was standard from 1993. Five-speed manual. Alloy wheels, power mirrors, power steering and windows, radio/cassette. FORD CAPRI 2D CONVERTIBLE (1992-1993) WRONGLY maligned, the Capri overcame its early quality problems and developed into a good vehicle. Locally re-styled Club Sprint models are now commanding good prices. The turbocharged 1.6-litre Mazda 16-valve DOHC engine performs well. Alloy wheels, cruise control, central locking, leather steering wheel and trim, power steering and windows, radio/cassette. PEUGEOT 306 2D CABRIOLET (1994-2001) SIMPLE but elegant lines make the continental challenger a standout. A 1.8-litre engine is coupled to four-speed auto or five-speed manual, driving the front wheels. Some scuttle shake but ride and handling are excellent. Anti-lock brakes, air- conditioning, alloy wheels, central locking, electric hood, fog lights, power mirrors and windows and radio/cassette are standard. NISSAN NX-R 2D COUPE (1991-1996) NOT a soft-top but the strong 2.0-litre twin cam engine from the Pulsar gives sports car performance. Front-wheel drive with four-speed auto or five-speed manual. Handling is too soft to be in the true sports car class but it rides well. A bonus is seating for four people and a large boot - easily the most roomy of this group.
