A DECADE is a long time to be without a seven-seater SUV that’s at home off-road, so it is understandable that Holden chose to overlook the fading Jackaroo nameplate for its latest ute-based 4x4 wagon.
Built in Thailand alongside the vehicle that shares most of its underpinnings, the Colorado 7 brings proper everything: seven-seat accommodation, bush-bashing 4WD capability and three-tonne towing capacity. Better still, the Holden undercuts its Prado opponent by several thousand dollars.
But is it enough to dethrone the popular Toyota?

Jackaroo
Released: 1991
Ended: 2004
Family Tree: Colorado 7The all-new second-generation Jackaroo was a massive leap forward from its lightweight 1981 predecessor, bringing better space, equipment, refinement, driveability and performance to the series.
Engine options were a 3.1-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel with five-speed manual and 3.2-litre V6 petrol/five-speed manual combo with the option of a four-speed auto, in two-door and longer-wheelbase four-door wagon guises, and all offering tough low-range 4x4 capability. In 1998 the U8 facelift brought significant improvements across the board, as well as a new 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel and a 3.5-litre V6.
