Road TestCar reviews - Holden - Astra - CDXi 5-dr hatchHolden modelsOverviewHolden's all-new AH Astra five-door makes big strides in the small car category4 Mar 2005 By CHRIS HARRIS SLICK Euro looks, more class, more space and more comfort add up to a Holden Astra that once again forges ahead in its class as a small car to aspire to. The AH Astra reminds us that in Europe its competition is a little upmarket of what it has to deal with here. The previous model’s deficits were relatively few and mainly comprised a rather drab-looking interior that was less inviting than most other small cars. The new Astra banishes those thoughts forever with a clean, appealing interior look that is backed up by comfortable seating and plenty of space everywhere. But what may have been a minor demerit in the previous (but still available) TS Astra – the fact it only offered a meagre 90kW – assumes greater significance in the bigger and heavier new model. A convertible version arrived here in December 2001 (and is still on sale) while the three-door 147kW SRi Turbo version lobbed in May 2003. After the TS Astra was discontinued in June 2004, Holden reintroduced "Classic" sedan and hatch versions of the TS. Dubbed "model year 4.5", Astra Classic continues on sale as an entry-level model alongside the new AH Astra (on sale from November 2004) tested here. |
