Super TestCar reviews - Ford - Taurus - Ghia sedanFord modelsUsed Rivals25 Jul 2003 FORD FAIRMONT 4D SEDAN (1996-1998) WITH the XR6's Tickford-tuned 4.0-litre engine and suspension modifications, the Ghia has the go and handling to match the lavish gear. The usual big Ford virtues of space, a mountain of tow-friendly torque and low running costs apply. Although not quite as refined as the imported V6s here, the last of the old-shape Fords are bug-free. HOLDEN CALAIS 4D SEDAN (1996-1997) THE Calais impresses as a good cruiser with a roomy cabin. Equipment levels are high although the interior has dated. The powerful, economical V6 is dependable if a little unrefined while the independent rear suspension provides a pleasant ride and good dynamics. Another tough, well sorted Australian car. NISSAN MAXIMA 4D SEDAN (1995-2000) THE V6 engine is a gem - powerful, sewing-machine smooth and economical. The styling is uninspired, the interior spacious and well made and equipment levels impressive. Dynamically, the Maxima lacks the finesse of its Japanese counterparts - but what an engine. TOYOTA VIENTA 4D SEDAN (1995-1997) TOYOTA'S attempt to woo die-hard Cressida owners with this Vienta in drag cuts it as a driver's car but looks too Camry-like. The engineering quality is excellent, the sweet V6 powerful and economical but the interior - though roomy - is just not special enough. Locally made and tough.
