FORD Australia ought to be proud, because the EcoLPi LPG system in the FG Falcon is the best and most integrated of its type available on this planet. Bringing tangible improvements to performance, economy, emissions and driveability compared to the outdated E-Gas system that was deemed unfit for Euro 4 pollution requirements, the latest LPG Falcon shades its regular ULP I6 sibling in areas that are worlds removed from the smelly taxi image of past systems. We implore large car buyers to take a look at EcoLPi before making a decision.

Family Tree: FalconUNLIKE the rest of the FG Falcon models, the E-Gas LPG model using the Orion fumigation/mixer ‘vapour’ version of the 4.0-litre in-line six-cylinder dedicated LPG engine remained basically the same as it did when it debuted in the BA model in September 2002. So it did not get the FG I6’s dual-mode split plenum intake manifold, fast-burn cylinder head or high-energy ignition system upgrades, five-speed auto or optional ZF six-speed auto gearbox choices or 2.73 final drive ratio. The result was an inferior drive to its petrol-powered brethren, pumping out just 156kW of power and 370Nm of torque through the old four-speed auto transmission, compared to the regular XT models’ 195kW and 391Nm. Fuel consumption was also down – 14.9L/100km against just 9.9L for the 2010 upgraded FG XT. Still, the E-Gas proved popular with fleet buyers, and accounted for up to 25 per cent of total Falcon volume.
