Super TestCar reviews - Ford - Explorer - rangeFord modelsResearch Ford Used Rivals7 May 2003 TOYOTA LANDCRUISER PRADO 4D WAGON (1996-2001) CAR-LIKE steering, handling and good performance from silky V6 makes Prado our pick, especially considering its excellent build quality, nice interior, reliability, comfort and eight-seater ability. Huge 159-litre fuel tank gives great range. JEEP CHEROKEE 4D WAGON (1994-2001) HANDILY compact around town, the Cherokee appeals with a gutsy 4.0-litre V6 engine that mates well to a four-speed auto (or a clattery 2.5 turbodiesel for torque or economy freaks), and high equipment levels. But it's very old (circa 1983) and feels so in its handling, ride and steering, despite a '97 makeover. NISSAN PATHFINDER 4D WAGON (1995-1999) THE good looking, monocoque chassis Pathfinder is at home on the road with commendable steering, ride and handling. The 3.3-litre six is efficient and revvy but not so torquey. Well equipped with a car-like interior although the rear seat is cramped. SSANGYONG MUSSO 4D WAGON (1996-1998) BIZARRE styling clothes a practical and city-friendly 4WD package. The Mercedes-sourced, in-line six-cylinder engine and transmission combo is a gem, offering grunt and refinement. Low grade plastics and an orchestra of squeaks and rattles detract, as do uncomfortable seats and cramped cabin. Well specified.
