Super TestCar reviews - Daihatsu - Terios - rangeDaihatsu modelsUsed Rivals25 Sep 2003 SUZUKI X90 2-dr TARGA (1996-1998) THE X90 is basically a two-seat version of the Vitara as it shares its engine, driveline and running gear with the three-door version of the other small off-road Suzuki. Its cute styling certainly turns heads but it is only a two-seater and the boot is small. A dual-range gearbox means it can handle the rough stuff. MAZDA 121 METRO 5-dr (1997-1999) MAZDA’S 121 Metro offers lots more room than the Terios and the performance to make life more enjoyable for manual and auto drivers. The car’s ride and handling is also way ahead of the Terios. But it does not have the high ground clearance or four-wheel drive so trips onto the beach are not on. HYUNDAI EXCEL LX 5-dr (1994-2000) THE 1.5-litre engine gives the Excel good performance, while a long body and wheelbase also ensure it has plenty of space for both passengers and luggage. But in the areas of comfort, refinement, driving pleasure, safety, durability and reliability there are better contenders out there. TOYOTA STARLET LIFE 5-dr (1997-1999) THE Starlet is the shortest car in the group but still offers more elbow room than the Terios. Nevertheless, legroom is tight in the back. Its 1.3-litre engine provides heaps more go. Handling and refinement levels are good but the ride gets flustered when pressed over bumps. Backed by Toyota’s trademark reliability.
