COME in Grand Voyager. One of the pioneers of the car-based people-mover segment has undergone a comprehensive rethink with a completely redesigned body, new front-wheel drive platform featuring coil spring rear suspension, and an increased dose of 21st century showroom appeal in the shape of a diesel engine option, high-tech multimedia interactivity, and some much-needed safety and security upgrading. Combined with a sensible new look and high equipment levels, Chrysler is hoping to lure consumers sick of thirsty SUVs or cheaper, smaller cars that simply cannot carry the sort of family clobber the Grand Voyager does with absolute ease.

Family Tree: Grand VoyagerTHE fourth-generation Chrysler people-mover (and the second version to be sold in Australia since early 1997) brought a number of refinements to what is essentially the same package as the GS Voyager. For a time, Chrysler even got creative and offered long and short wheelbases and front or all-wheel drive, but the basic seven-seater arrangement remained, as did the availability of the company’s long-serving 128kW/278Nm 3.3-litre OHV V6 petrol engine, driving through a four-speed automatic. The Series II from November 2004 ditched the short-wheelbase, but introduced ‘Stow ‘n Go’ to greatly enhance the load-carrying capacity.
