Based on the fourth-generation Volkswagen Golf/Audi A3 platform and built in Hungary, early versions lacked the little lip spoiler that was later mandatory (late-1999 onwards) after a number of high-speed stability-related accidents, but this did not dampen consumer enthusiasm for the design icon. Powering all four wheels via a Haldex AWD system misleadingly dubbed ‘quattro’ is a 165kW/280Nm 1.8-litre 20V four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. |
