WHAT is it, how much does it cost and where does it sit in the range? This car raises so many questions that Audi ought to call it the ‘A?’ not ‘A7’. Pitched against the super-successful Mercedes-Benz CLS as well as BMW's not-so-hot 5 Series GT (at least until the all-new 6 Series sedan arrives), this four-seater five-door supercharged V6 slingshot seems like the answer to something that nobody even thought to ask. So you can imagine our surprise when we found ourselves reluctant to hand it back.

Audi C2 100 Avant
Released: 1977
Ended: 1982
Family Tree: A7LOOKING a little like an overgrown first-gen VW Passat, the C2 100 Avant was a five-door version of the boxy but elegant Audi luxury car of the 1970s, offering its choice of four and five-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, usually driving the front wheels via a three-speed automatic or four or five-speed manual gearbox. Australians never saw the Avant until the cigar-shaped C3 100 wagon appeared in the mid-‘80s, while with just 49,652 versions built, this Avant only accounted for about five per cent of total C2 100 production.
