When Subaru's all-new go-anywhere Outback wagon launched in early 2015, it brought a diverse five-variant line-up with a choice of three engines, two specification levels and manual or automatic transmission options.

At the top of the pack, the auto-only 3.6R used a gutsy 191kW/350Nm flat-six engine, but a 2.0-litre boxer diesel and 2.5-litre petrol flat-four (also automatic only) were also offered.

Mid-range diesel variants offered the most choice with standard or Premium equipment levels, while both versions could be ordered with either the automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) or a six-speed manual gearbox.

The new version shared a platform and many mechanicals with its Liberty sedan sibling, which was introduced simultaneously.

Just a year after the launch of the Liberty and Outback pair, Subaru delivered a light model year update for both ranges, bringing a suspension revision and Vision Assist safety tech to the line-up, while the Outback got the company's acclaimed EyeSight stereoscopic active safety system for all auto variants.
